Research, design, manufacture

Edgewave covers the full engineering lifecycle — from research, modelling and simulation at one end to small-scale manufacture at the other, and every stage in between. We’re as happy taking on a focused research or feasibility study as we are running a small production batch. Engage us for a single specialist piece, or for an entire programme.

FPGA & HDL Design

Production-grade digital design for real-time and signal-intensive applications. We design, implement and rigorously verify custom logic — and we treat verification as a first-class deliverable, not an afterthought.

  • VHDL and Verilog, AMD/Xilinx, Intel/Altera and Lattice devices
  • Real-time video, image and signal-processing pipelines
  • AXI4 and AXI4-Stream interfaces and custom IP
  • DSP and maths in the fabric (fixed-point, pipelined arithmetic)
  • Verification with cocotb and OSVVM, with reproducible testbenches
  • Toolchain: Vivado, Vitis and standalone/FreeRTOS BSPs

Embedded Software, Firmware & Linux

Reliable software that gets hardware working and keeps it working — from bare-metal firmware on a microcontroller through to a full embedded Linux platform on application-class silicon.

  • C and C++, bare-metal and RTOS (e.g. FreeRTOS)
  • ARM Cortex-M (STM32 and others), board bring-up and debugging
  • Embedded Linux: application development, kernel and device-driver work
  • Board support, OS image build, integration and deployment (Yocto and similar)
  • Device drivers, peripheral integration and motor control
  • Communications: UART, SPI, I²C, USB and networked/connected modules
  • Robust, field-ready architecture informed by real deployment experience

DSP & Signal Processing

DSP & Signal Processing

Turning signal-processing algorithms into something that runs in real time on small, power-constrained hardware — a core specialism, applied across markets from video and audio to industrial sensing.

  • Video, image and audio processing
  • Spatial and immersive audio processing
  • Fixed-point implementation and Q-format design
  • Adaptive algorithms, detection and measurement
  • Algorithm-to-hardware: from model to FPGA or embedded target

Hardware Design & Electronics

The board beneath the firmware — designed for the signals it has to carry and the environment it has to survive.

  • Schematic capture and PCB design
  • Mixed-signal and sensor/instrumentation front-ends
  • Signal integrity and power design, optimised for low-power operation
  • Complex HDI, high layer count and fine-pitch BGA design
  • Design with manufacture and test in mind from day one

High-Speed Serial & Transceivers

High-speed serial links are where hardware, firmware and software meet — and where projects most often run into trouble. We work across all three, taking a fast interface from board-level signal integrity, through transceiver bring-up, to the protocol logic and drivers that sit on top.

  • PCI Express (PCIe) endpoint, DMA and link bring-up
  • 1G and 10G Ethernet
  • 12G-SDI and high-bitrate video transport
  • Custom and proprietary transport-layer designs
  • FPGA transceiver (SerDes / GT) configuration, bring-up and tuning
  • The full link end to end: signal integrity, protocol logic and host drivers

Product Development

The work that turns a working prototype into something you can sell — the mechanical and design-for-manufacture side.

  • Mechanical and enclosure design in Fusion 360
  • Folded sheet metal or CNC milled parts
  • Thermoformed and moulded plastic parts
  • Sealing and ingress protection for real-world environments
  • Design for manufacture and supplier selection
  • NPI, Manufacturing test, QA and inventory processes
  • Prototyping (3D print / SLS) through to production tooling
  • Design for EMC Compliance and “CE Mark” Testing
Manufacturing & Production

Manufacturing & Production

A design is only useful once it exists as a product. Edgewave supports manufacture at both ends of the scale — building in-house where volumes are low or the work is sensitive, and sourcing and managing external partners when it needs to scale.

In house, small-scale manufacture
  • Component procurement and supply
  • Unit assembly and build
  • Manufacturing test and inspection
  • Low-volume production runs
Managed subcontract manufacture
  • Sourcing and qualifying contract manufacturers and assembly partners
  • Managing outsourced manufacture, assembly and supply on your behalf
  • Production oversight, quality management and supply-chain coordination
